Vocation

Vocation

Recently I heard Judy Collins speak and sing, and without a guitar.

For those poor young souls who do not register the name.  Judy Collins is an old  hippie from the 60′s who wrote and sang beautifully and lived as hard as her music was wonderful.  She’s now about 70, looks pretty good and sang pretty darn well with no accompaniment.  She also has had her share of life scars caused by addiction and family suicide.

Interestingly, for all her dumb decisions and personal tragedies, she is still rich and famous.

Her unique talents and personal drive along with more than a little help from her creator,

(Lance Armstrong please take notice)
have carried her over the potholes of financial disaster and physical deterioration and disability.

She openly shared her weaknesses and mindless living on her roller coaster of an almost relentlessly successful vocation.  I say vocation because she believes that the world needs “light music”.

I have to believe that she meant light not in the sense of weight or meaning,

but light as a lamp to illuminate our way in the darkness.
Her light extends beyond music because she is also in a unique position to help address the issues of a current generation drowning in alcohol and drugs, both illegal and prescription.

Vocation.  A calling. Think voice, vocal.
God is always, always calling to us.
Inviting us to join him in some cool adventure.

Judy Collins vocation is not singing but sharing “light”  both in beautiful music and talking openly about her weaknesses and tragedies.  She is using all of life experiences, talents, skills, abilities and passions to influence people.  Bring the Kingdom just a bit closer.

We think of vocation as our “work”.

Too bad.
